With names of Generals and Governors
of Mexico scattered along its urban plan, the spaces
of San Miguel Chapultepec reside in a quiet
atmosphere where big ash trees, antique facades and
small streets, invite people to stroll through this
neighbourhood that, located at the feet of
Chapultepec Forest and just a few feet from it’s
vibrant neighbour, Colonia Condesa, offers us
endless intimate corners to discover.
Located in the central-west area of
Mexico City, Colonia San Miguel Chapultepec is an
authentic catalogue of urban details and
architectonical styles that entwine harmoniously
beneath the shadows of its tree-filled streets; its
antique eclectic constructions of the beginning of
the 20th Century, its neo-colonial and
deco houses, all showcase more than a hundred year
old traditions, from when the area composed the
agricultural limits of Tacubaya and Chapultepec,
bearing witness to some of the first developments of
Mexico City’s
west side.
The
area has two temples, one is dedicated to Saint
Michael the Archangel and the other to Our Lady of
Carmen, the latter is an imposing structure in
neoclassical style that possesses one of the
showiest copulas in the city. Other sites of
interest are the Russian Embassy which occupies an
old palace from the beginning of the 20th
Century and the UAM’s
Cultural Centre, located on Circuito Interior a
short distance from the Juanacatlan Metro station,
and which houses a library, conference rooms and
various exhibitions, the site: an old Porfirian
mansion surrounded by gardens and a beautiful
fountain with mythological motifs.
In
recent years this area has benefited from the Real
Estate expansion of the Colonia Condesa, as it has
motivated the rescue of old spaces and the
construction of new apartment buildings with lofts
and terraces, as well as the establishment of the
Kurimanzutto Gallery, one of the most prestigious in
the world. As a result, the streets of this pleasant
area of the city have become reinvigorated. |
