Polanco is one of the most famous and most exclusive
districts in Mexico City. It’s known for its
cultural diversity; as it houses Jews, Spaniards and
Lebanese, among others, mixed with a sophisticated
lifestyle characterized by a great amount of
shopping malls, prestigious designer stores like
Christian Dior or Hermés, famous jewelry shops like
Tiffany’s and first-class hotels which give the area
a cosmopolitan aspect.
The origins of the district of Polanco go back to
the early 20’s, when the plots of land that belonged
to the Morales’ Hacienda were divided. One of the
most prestigious restaurants in Mexico City is
located in the Main House of this Hacienda. The
plots of land that resulted from this division were
rapidly occupied by wealthy Jewish, Lebanese and
Spanish traders, in their haste to leave the city’s
Historical Centre, which turned this place into one
of the most elegant and cosmopolitan areas in town.
During recent years this district has been
experiencing a construction development phase that
has changed the image of the area; the multiple
hotels, shopping malls, art galleries, shops, office
skyscrapers and apartment buildings that have
recently been established, have turned the area into
one of the most important ones in the city.
While in Polanco, you can’t miss Presidente Masaryk
Avenue, with its luxurious stores and shopping
malls, or the National Anthropology and History
Museum, the Rufino Tamayo Museum and the Modern Art
Museum.
