Authentic
mesoamerican acropolis, Xochicalco, wich name means in
nahuatl: "the place of the house of the flowers" is an
important archeological zone located in the state of
Morelos, approximately38 km at the southwest of the city
of Cuernavaca.
Xohicalco
had its origin approximately in the year 300 a.C. when
began its construction at the top of a various hills 100
meter high from the sourrounding savannahs. Hills that
by means of retaining walls and the construction of
terraces and slopes, allowed the creation of a control
and commercial interchange center that with the passage
of the centuries, became teh main city of Mesoamerica
after the fall of Teotihuacan. It was between the years
600 to 900 a.C. when Xochicalco served from refuge to
important groups of immigrants from all the corners of
the Ancient Mexico, immigrants who interchanged in this
city products, traditions and rites, between which
emphasizes specially the advocation to Quetzalcoatl, the
god of civilization, under whose priests, Xochicalco
became a flourishing cultural and artistic center.
One of
the most outstanding constructions of Xochicalco, is the
the temple of Quetzalcoatl,
widely recognized by his
refined high - relieves wich represent different symbols
and passages from this God, symbolized by the effigy of
the feathered snake.
Special
mention requires the Observatory, same that taking
advantage of the present caves in the site, marks the
arrival of the spring and autumn equinox with a strong
solar light that projects solely in those dates on the
floor of the cavern in which it is.
This
archaeological zone account with a site museum where are
the objects found in the investigations of the place, of
between which they emphasize specially the wakes.
In the
environs of this archaelogical site and thanks to the
generous warm climate of the zone, diverse bath and spas
have settled down that are the ideal complement to a
visit to the place. Also in the nights it is possible to
enjoy a spectacle of light and sound that has like scene
the prehispanic ruins.
You can
arrive to Xochicalco after approximately hour and half of driving from Mexico City, arriving first to
Cuernavaca and taking then the route 95 to to the county
of Temixco. |
