In the state of Morelos, sheltered by the
steep rocky crags of the Tepozteco mountain range,
Tepoztlán extends across a magnificent valley where its
rich history melts with its exuberant subtropical
landscape.
Tepoztlán was originated in the 10th
Century A.D. when it was inhabited by the tlahuica tribe.
A short time later, at the very top of Tepozteco hill, a
small altar was built in which several ritual ceremonies
were celebrated. Years later, the missionaries who
accompanied the first Spanish conquistadors decided to
take advantage of the religious traditions of the area
to build one of the oldest Christian constructions in
the centre of Mexico which still stands today in the
town centre and which houses an interesting local museum.
Without a doubt the main attraction of
this place is the famous Tepozteco pyramid, which can be
reached after a 2 hour hike through winding trails
flanked by tropical vegetation and crumbling stone walls
that nature and time have moulded to form a mystical
environment.
It is precisely this mysticism and the
magical properties attributed to the ceremonial centre
and the whole area, which attracts a large number of
visitors every year, and so, in Tepoztlán, one can find
a large number of shops dedicated to the sale of
esoteric articles, alternative therapy centres, spas and
even new age hotels.
Tepoztlán’s
cultural richness is also made up of diverse religious
celebrations, like the Fiesta de los Chinelos, an
authentic fusion of indigenous and Christian traditions,
which by means of showy costumes, masks and traditional
dances, represents one of the most original carnivals in
the world.
Tepoztlán is very well communicated with
the central area of the country, and it’s
only an hour away from Mexico City.
