Surrounded by forests and fertile fields, Mineral del
Monte surprises to us with its houses, their corners and
their side streets that break through in the steep
mountainous area on which it is. This beautiful mining
town, located at the south of the state of Hidalgo, has
its origin like several populations of the center of
Mexico, in its mine of silver, the same that were set
off by the rich Mexican industralist Pedro Romero de
Terreros during the last years of the colonial period.
Time later in the first half of the XIXth Century, an
English company started the operation of the mine,
attracting an important number of immigrants from the
south of England who brought their customs, and even
their form of living and their architecture to the zone,
giving a new peak to the mining operation by means of
the introduction of modern machinery, that could well be
considered as one of the first examples of the
industrial revolution in Latin America.
They are
indeed of English influence several of the main
attractives of Mineral del Monte, like its houses of two
levels with ceilings to two waters and chimneys, as well
as the English cementery where are the rest of many of
the ancestors of the arrived miners in XIXth century.
This influence is also perceived in the food, where
emphasize the well-known pastes, delicious pies with
diverse fillings made with flour of potatoes as the
English way. In the Mineral del Monte surroundings there
are several places of interest like Piedras Encimadas
geologic formation, the Basaltic Prisms, the El Chico
National Park, the town of Huasca and the Ex - Hacienda
of San Miguel Regla, now turned into a prestigious
hotel. Recently Mineral of Monte has been included
within the circuit of "Magical Towns of Mexico" reason
why this town is experiencing an important touristic
development.
Mineral
del Monte is about 2 hours and quarter driving north of
Mexico City and is accessible through the Freeway Mexico
- Pachuca. |
